Lesson03: Method of Creative Thinking

Exercise:

We are required to create a mind-map about ourselves and give explanation about it.

This is a mind map about myself.

For me, we should start a mind map with the main subject at the center and then link it to the others. I think images with short description is the best way to make an effective mind map.

When I do a mind map, I like to express it like an art and try to make the description as simple as possible.

Lecture Summary:

In this week 4 lecture, I learned another new topic which is about mind-mapping. Mind-mapping is a great tool for idea generation and brainstorming and was introduced by Tony Buzan.

There are two methods of mind-map which are Logical Mind-map and Associated Mind-map. Logical Mind-map is connected to stereotypes and directly related to central subject through it links while Associated Mind-map is generate random words and also show the links between words that seemingly have no connection.

There are also certain rules in order to produce a good logical mind-mapping.

1. The main subject should be at the centerof the mind-map.
2. Make the subject more dominant.
3. Decide the main categories.
4. Use different colours for different categories
5. For more interesting and personal, use images and drawings for the mind-map

In this lecture, I also learned about stereotype. From the lecture notes, we can define that stereotype is a conventional formulaic, an oversimplified conception, opinion or image.

Stereotypes usually used in logical mind map. The logical mind map comprises of solely stereotype words which means that every image or word that is put within the mind map is directly related to the central subject.

For conclussion, there are two methods of mind mapping which are logical and associated mind mapping. We also can conclude that mind-mapping is a good way to generate idea and should be in an interesting way.

Personal Reflection:

In my own opinion, we should apply mind-map method to generate ideas and brainstorming in anything we do.

An interesting mind map with colours, images and drawing is a very good techniques. In this way, we will attracted with the mind map and understand it better.

For me, knowing the rule of logical mind mapping is the best part of this topic. Its explained the best technique to produce a good mind map.

For conclussion, mind map is the best tool for brainstorming and generate new ideas.

Lesson02: Novelty, Creativity, Innovation and Invention

Lecture Summary:

From the lecture in week 3, I learned a new interesting topic which is about Novelty, Creativity, Innovation and Invention.

By definition, we can say that Novelty is the quality of being new, fresh and interesting which is always based on what has been created before. As in week 2 lecture, we learned that Creativity is the ability to generate new ideas by combining, changing or reapplying existing ideas. Therefore, we can say that Novelty is the same as Creativity (Levitt).

Creativity also can be describe as thinking up new things or an idea. And by doing new things based on this new ideas, we can define it as Innovation. Creativity is the same as Ideas. Innovation is the same as Ideas + Action.

Invention can be describe as a new composition, device or process.

For conclusion, Novelty, Creativity, Innovation and Invention are connected with each other.

Personal Reflection:

In my own opinion, as a student in FCM, we need to learn Novelty, Creativity, Innovation and Invention to be a creative person. A creative person is not only about thinking new ideas (Creativity and Novelty), but also doing new things based on the new ideas (Innovation and Invention). Sometimes, a person can have a brilliant idea, but can't make it work. By understanding Novelty, Creativity, Innovation and Invention, we can be a great creative person.
